What is the difference between thesis coaching and thesis editing?
We don’t edit the work of our coaching clients. We help them to edit their work. We help our clients acquire the skills and confidence they need to work effectively with their supervisors and the researcher support services at their universities to develop and submit a thesis that does justice to themselves, their topic and all the people who have a stake in their thesis.
Our thesis coaching services are most useful when clients have all the chapters of their thesis in draft form, but need more help with the language, structure, sequencing and presentation of their material than their university’s supervisors, reasearch consultants, writing consultants and peer support services can provide. We help our clients to get their thesis back under control and to a standard that they and their supervisors regard as ready to submit for examination.
What is the difference between thesis coaching and thesis supervision?
A thesis coach complements the work of thesis supervisors, reasearch consultants, writing consultants and peer support services and can devote more time to each individual client. A thesis coach works for the client, not the university. We have more time to listen to you and work with you to address the problems you are having in working to get your thesis into a submissible form.
As well as looking at the language, structure and formatting of the thesis, we help our clients work more productively with wordprocessing and citation software, with diagrams and other images and improve the ways they name, store, locate and retrieve their files and data. We help our clients to get their thesis back under control and to a standard that they and their supervisors regard as ready to submit for examination.
Do you only work with students from specific disciplines?
We are happy to work with students from any discipline. We have satisfied clients from the sciences and the humanities. We can draw on expertise from disciplinary specialists where necessary.
Do you work with qualitative research, quantitative research or mixed methods research?
We have worked effectively with qualitative researchers, quantitative researchers and mixed methods researchers.
Do you work with international students or just domestic students?
We work with international students and domestic students, with people who are fluent in written academic English and people who have frequent or occasional difficulties communicating fluently in written academic English or spoken English.
How long is a one-to-one in-person coaching session?
We have found that two hours (preferably with a short break in the middle) is the optimal length for a one-to-one in-person coaching session.
How frequent are the one-to-one in-person coaching sessions?
That depends on the client, the state of the client’s thesis and the deadline for completion of that thesis. Clients generally seek our help after they have all the chapters of their thesis in draft form.
Clients needing more intensive help may need three or four coaching sessions a week for one or more weeks to help them get their thesis back under control and on track for submission by the due date.
Some clients only need a coaching session once a week or once a fortnight to help them work productively on their thesis in the last few months prior to submission of their thesis.
Other clients only need occasional coaching by email or phone and perhaps one-to-one in-person coaching sessions once every month or so.
Do you only do one-to-one, face-to-face coaching?
We find one-to-one, face-to-face coaching works best, but are prepared to offer coaching sessions by Skype to clients unable to attend face-to-face meetings at agreed sites within the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia. Once we have established an effective working relationship with a client, we may also supplement their one-to-one in-person coaching sessions with other coaching support such as coaching by email or phone or Skype.
Where do you hold your one-to-one, face-to-face coaching sessions with clients?
Some clients prefer on-campus meetings, some clients prefer off-campus meetings. Within the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia, we make no charges for travel to or from the agreed sites for one-to-one coaching sessions.
We also deliver one-to-one coaching sessions at other locations within Western Australia, provided the coaching client (or a group of coaching clients) can pay for our coach’s roundtrip travel by public transport from Perth to the agreed site for one-to-one coaching sessions and where necessary for overnight accommodation.
I have little cash or credit right now. Do you offer payment plans for your coaching services?
Yes – but we can only extend our phased payment plans to a limited number of coaching clients at any one time. We also limit payment plans to cover a maximum of 35 coaching hours and only permit clients to have a single phased payment plan in operation at any one time.
If you would prefer a phased payment plan, ask about the payment plan option at the initial meeting with our coach. If we can make a payment plan available for you:
– an administration surcharge of 15% will be applied to the total cost (including charges for any travel and accommodation outside the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia).
– you will receive an online invoice for one-third of the full amount one day after the start of the payment plan,
– you will receive an online invoice for a further third of the full amount 30 days after the start of the payment plan, and
– you will receive an online invoice for the remaining third of the full amount 60 days after the start of your payment plan.
